ANNOUNCING NAMA SCHOOL OF CDK’S SIXTEENTH SUMMER CAMP
JUNE 17TH– JUNE 20TH, 2026
November 6th, 2025
Dear Martial Artist:
In 2026, Northern Arizona Martial Arts School of Chung Do Kwan will be hosting its sixteenth summer camp. It is our aspiration, in hosting this event, to carry on the tradition of excellence set by Sensei Don Richardson during his “Challenge in the Pines” camps.
Location and dates: The camp will be held at our dojo in the De Miguel Elementary School Gym, Flagstaff, Arizona, commencing Wednesday, June 17th, at 1:00 pm, and running through Saturday, June 20th. Lunches will be provided during the camp on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, but this year we are unable to provide breakfasts, dinners or lodging.
Transportation: Flagstaff has a smaller size airport which typically involves a transfer from the Phoenix Airport. The major city connection is Phoenix, Arizona. There is a shuttle service, (Arizona Shuttle), from the Phoenix Airport to NAU which is close to our location. A variety of rental car companies operate out of both the Flagstaff and Phoenix airports. If you need transportation from the Flagstaff airport to your lodging or camp, please let us know your flight number and arrival time, and we will have someone meet you.
About the camp: We are encouraging both youngsters and adults to attend this camp. Our camps are child friendly, and classes will be available for eight-year-olds and up. Younger children may participate with prior permission from the camp director.
Our itinerary should be extremely exciting, demanding and rewarding. Non-inclusive planned activities include running, stretching, calisthenics, Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do, forms workshops, bunkai, one and three step sparring, freestyle sparring, and self-defense. Balintawak, Judo, Jujitsu, Control Techniques, Yoga, Taiji and more may be offered depending on instructor availability.
Wednesday afternoon’s schedule will be determined when we finalize instructor availability.
The tentative daily schedule Thursday & Friday will be:
0800 – 1000 – Run, stretching and Chung Do Kwan workout
1000 – 1200 – 1st workshop
1200 – 1330 – Lunch and rest period
1330 – 1500 – 2nd workshop
1500 – 1530 – Rest period
1530 – 1730 – 3rd workshop
1845 – 2045 – Thursday NAMA Chung Do Kwan Practice and/or workshop depending on interest and instructor availability.
Saturday morning sessions will be similar to the above.
Saturday belt testing and demonstrations begin at around 2 p.m. after the morning sessions and lunch. The demonstration will be followed by an end of camp dinner.
Promotions: Instructors – please let us know a couple weeks prior to camp how many tests, by belt grade, you will want conducted. If a student’s instructor is not present, the student will need a signed letter of recommendation from the instructor prior to testing. Instructors from other organizations and disciplines are welcome to conduct promotion testing of their students at this time with prior notification to the camp director.
We feel it is appropriate that each person promoted be presented with their new belt immediately following testing time, so please bring what belts you will need for your students or, if you wish, we can provide them at cost. Just let us know the color, size and number needed a few weeks ahead of time.
If you have Chung Do Kwan dan candidates, please let us know a few weeks ahead of camp, so we can notify Grandmaster Hillson of belt sizes and names. As in the last few years, Chung Do Kwan first dan candidates should schedule a ZOOM pretest two to three months prior to camp.
What You Will Need to Bring:
* Clothing – Workout uniforms (gi/dobok, sweat suits, military fatigues, etc. as some workouts may be outdoors).
* One dress uniform
* Jogging shoes
* Light rain gear
* Jacket

Some notes from the camp director:
This is a high altitude (7,000 ft elevation) martial arts training camp. The curriculum is physically demanding and purposely designed to help each participant reach a personal best. All participants should be in good physical condition upon arrival. If in doubt, start your conditioning training NOW! It is recommended you obtain a thorough physical from your physician prior to attending camp.
We look forward to sharing a mutually beneficial experience with you. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact our camp director, Brad Bransky, 6th Dan, at (928) 266-5320, bradb42@yahoo.com.
Yours in the Martial Arts,
Brad Bransky
